The heart is located in the thoracic cavity medial to the lungs and posterior to the sternum. As you can see in the heart diagram above, the heart wall is made of 3 layers: epicardium, myocardium and endocardium. The epicardium is the outermost layer of the heart wall and is just another name for the visceral layer of the pericardium. The myocardium is the muscular middle layer of the heart wall that contains the cardiac muscle tissue. Endocardium is the simple squamous endothelium layer that lines the inside of the heart.

The heart itself is made up of 4 chambers, 2 atria and 2 ventricles. De-oxygenated blood returns to the right side of the heart via the venous circulation. It is pumped into the right ventricle and then to the lungs where carbon dioxide is released and oxygen is absorbed. The oxygenated blood then travels back to the left side of the heart into the left atria, then into the left ventricle from where it is pumped into the aorta and arterial circulation.
