Potential Energy Diagrams

Take a tour to these free and printable potential energy diagrams to give you more insight about the energy diagrams! We have five downloadable diagrams to help you study deeper into the potential energy lesson. A potential energy diagram shows the change in potential energy of a system as reactants are converted into products. The figure below shows basic potential energy diagrams for an endothermic reaction.

Provided above is potential energy diagram endothermic. In endothermic reactions, heat energy is taken in from the surroundings, and turned into potential energy in the products. As a result, the enthalpy of the products is greater than the enthalpy of the reactants. The enthalpy change (ΔH) is positive for an endothermic reaction and negative for an exothermic reaction. This can be seen in the potential energy diagrams.

The total potential energy of the system increases for the endothermic reaction as the system absorbs energy from the surroundings. The total potential energy of the system decreases for the exothermic reaction as the system releases energy to the surroundings.
