All cells have an outer plasma membrane that regulates not only what enters the cell, but also how much of any given substance comes in. As you can notice in the plasma membrane diagram above, plasma membrane consists of a lipid bilayer with embedded proteins. The basic function of the cell membrane is to protect the cell from its surroundings. The cell membrane controls the movement of substances in and out of cells and organelles. In animal cells, the plasma membrane is present in the outer most layer of the cell and in plant cell it is present just beneath the cell wall.
