Phase diagrams show the preferred physical states of matter at different temperatures and pressure. Within each phase, the material is uniform with respect to its chemical composition and physical state. The phase diagram of water is, however, complex. The water phase diagram has a triple point corresponding to the single temperature and pressure at which solid, liquid, and gaseous water can coexist in a stable equilibrium (273.16 K and a partial vapor pressure of611.657 Pa). In water’s diagram, the slope of the line between the solid and liquid states is negative rather than positive. The reason is that water is an unusual substance in that its solid state is less dense than the liquid state. Ice floats in liquid water. Therefore, a pressure change has the opposite effect on those two phases.
