In an energy diagram, the vertical axis represents the overall energy of the reactants, while the horizontal axis is the reaction coordinate, tracing from left to right the progress of the reaction from starting compounds to final products. Energy changes in a reaction can be shown using energy diagrams. These show the level of energy of the reactants and of the products. It is therefore simple to see whether the reaction is exothermic or endothermic. The bigger the difference between the two, the more energy is given out or taken in. In an exothermic reaction, the products are at a lower energy than the reactants. In an endothermic reaction, the products are at a higher energy than the reactants.


This energy diagram is a graph of the progress of a chemical reaction, versus the total energy of the system. In this diagram, the activation energy is signified by the hump in the reaction pathway and is labeled. At the peak of the activation energy hump, the reactants are in the transition state, halfway between being reactants and forming products. This state is also known as an activated complex.
