Muscles provide strength, balance, posture, movement and heat for the body to keep warm. There are three distinct types of muscles: skeletal muscles, cardiac or heart muscles, and smooth (non-striated) muscles. In the diagrams of muscular system below, shown more zoomed parts of the muscle.

Skeletal muscles are voluntary muscles that attach to, and contract to move the bones. Skeletal muscles often work in pairs. When one muscle is contracting, the other is relaxing. Tendons are grouped in both the skeletal system and the muscular system since they connect the two systems (connect muscle to bone). Meanwhile, heart muscles are distinct from skeletal muscles because the muscles fibers are laterally connected to each other.
