Starfish are echinoderms which have a calcareous skeleton covered with skin. They also usually have spines. One of the most noticeable features of starfish are their arms. Many sea stars have five arms, but some species may have up to 40. These arms are often covered with spines for protection. They also don’t have a circulatory system like we do. The aboral or upper surface may be smooth, granular or spiny, and is covered with overlapping plates. Many species are brightly colored in various shades of red or orange, while others are blue, grey or brown. Starfish have tube feet operated by a hydraulic system and a mouth at the center of the oral or lower surface. Starfish are marine invertebrates. They have a water vascular system. This is a system of canals in which seawater, instead of blood, circulates throughout the sea star’s body. Water is drawn into the sea star’s body through the madreporite, or sieve plate. Water can go both in and out through this part.
