Cash flow diagrams visually represent income and expenses over some time interval. The diagram consists of a horizontal line with markers at a series of time intervals. At appropriate times, expenses and costs are shown. A cash flow diagram is a tool used by accountants and engineers, to represent the transactions of cash which will take place over the course of a given project. Cash flow diagrams may also be used to represent payment schedules for bonds, mortgages and other types of loans. More examples of the diagrams are posted in the following images.

As you can see on the diagrams, the cash outflows are generally represented by vertically downward arrows whereas the cash inflows are represented by vertically upward arrows. Now that you know how to draw cash flows, you can embellish your diagram to make it more useful. In general you want to add labels to your diagram but only to the point that they are helpful. Keep in mind that the purpose of the diagram is to illustrate a complex financial transaction as concisely as possible. Adding too much information only confuses the issue.
